Latex Care 101: How to Keep Your Latex Glossy, Flawless, and Long-Lasting
Latex is unlike any other material in your wardrobe. Worn well and cared for properly, it keeps its mirror shine and second-skin fit for years. Neglected, it can become dull, brittle, or stained within months. The good news: latex care isn't complicated — it's just specific. Here's everything you need to know.
Before You Wear It
Start clean. Begin with clean, dry skin. Remove rings, watches, and sharp jewellery — latex is strong under tension but vulnerable to punctures and nicks. Smooth your nails and handle the material with your fingertips only, never a pinching grip.
Getting dressed. Never pull latex on like ordinary clothing. Apply a latex-safe lubricant or a light dusting of talc to the inside of the garment, then roll it gently onto your body. Work in stages, adjusting as you go. Never yank, pinch, or pull from a single point — that's how seams tear.
The shine. Fresh out of the package, latex has a matte finish. The signature high-gloss look comes from polishing: apply a small amount of latex-safe silicone shine and buff gently with a soft, lint-free cloth. A little goes a long way.
While wearing. Keep latex away from oils (including many body lotions and perfumes), copper and other metals, rough surfaces, sharp objects, and strong heat. Copper is latex's worst enemy — even brief contact can leave permanent brown stains. Treat seams and zips with extra care.
After You Wear It
Wash. As soon as possible after wearing, hand wash in lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap or a dedicated latex cleaner. Rinse thoroughly — soap residue left in the material can degrade it over time.
Dry. Pat gently with a towel, then let it air dry completely — inside and out. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and any other heat source. Sunlight and heat are the two fastest ways to age latex.
Store. Once fully dry, lightly dust the surface with talc or apply a latex-safe silicone conditioner. Store in a cool, dark, dry place — away from copper, other metals, oils, and sunlight. A black plastic bag or a dedicated garment bag works well. Never store latex damp or folded while wet.
